Outdoor Recreation -- Horseback riding on the beach, kayaking
to sea caves, cycling to a cliffside picnic, canoeing a river,
hiking, golfing...active visitors are never bored here.
The Mendocino Coast is a paradise for campers and hikers with State and County Parks, wonderful hiking trails, camping facilities and beaches up and down the coast from Gualala to Westport and inland to the Boonville-Philo areas. Most have tent and RV spaces (reservations suggested) although the Mendocino Headlands State Park at Mendocino is designated day use only. State Parks include: Hendy Woods State Park (3 miles NW of Philo off Highway 128); Jackson State Park (10 miles E of Fort Bragg off Highway 20); Manchester State Beach (1 mile N of Manchester off Highway 1); MacKerricher State Park (3 miles N of Fort Bragg off Highway 1); Mendocino Headlands State Park (at Mendocino); Paul M. Dimmick Wayside Campground (5 miles NW of Navarro off Highway 128); Russian Gulch State Park (2 miles N of Mendocino off Highway 1); Sinkyone Wilderness State Park (18 miles N of Westport off Highway 1 and County Road 431); Van Damme State Park (at Little River off Highway 1) and Westport-Union Landing State Beach (3 miles N of Westport off Highway 1). Mendocino County Parks include: Faulkner County Park (2 miles W of Boonville off Highway 128); Indian Creek County Park (S of Philo off Highway 128).

Buildings -- Much of the coast's mid-19th
century architecture has landmark status; the entire town of Mendocino
is on the National Register of Historic Places. The annual Historic
House & Building Tour points admirers in the right direction.
Redwood Legacy -- Lumber
barons built many of the coast's towns in the last century, and
the timber business is still a strong presence today. Start with
a visit to the Guest House Museum in Fort Bragg to explore the
redwood legacy.
